Evelyn House

Tim English Design was engaged to create a contemporary coastal home that would fully embrace its elevated position while providing a comfortable and highly functional environment for everyday living. The brief centred on capturing expansive ocean views, maintaining privacy from neighbouring properties and creating a home that felt connected, spacious and effortless to live in despite the challenges of the steeply sloping site.

Rather than fighting the site's topography, the design works with the natural landform, stepping with the slope to maximise outlook, natural light and coastal breezes. Living and entertaining spaces were positioned to take advantage of panoramic ocean views, while carefully considered screening elements provide privacy and protection from the coastal environment. A series of interconnected levels, double-height voids and visual connections create a strong sense of openness and cohesion throughout the home, ensuring the vertical layout feels intuitive and highly liveable.

Natural stone, timber screening and contemporary coastal materials were selected to create a refined architectural identity that responds to both the setting and climate. The design carefully balances bold architectural expression with warmth and functionality, creating spaces that are equally suited to entertaining, relaxation and everyday family life.

The result is a highly site-responsive coastal residence that transforms the constraints of a steep hillside allotment into one of its greatest strengths. Through thoughtful planning and a strong connection to its surroundings, Evelyn House delivers a home defined by light, outlook and liveability, creating a private coastal sanctuary that celebrates its remarkable setting while supporting the lifestyle aspirations of its owners.
