Farnborough House

The client sought a modern rural homestead/farmhouse that would capture expansive views across the property while providing a highly functional home for family living and entertaining. The brief incorporated designing a residence that balanced a strong architectural presence with warmth and liveability, creating an expansive home that felt connected to its rural surroundings rather than dominating them. A key objective was to establish generous indoor and outdoor living spaces that could be enjoyed year-round while supporting both everyday family life and large-scale entertaining.
The design responds to the site's unique opportunities and constraints through a series of interconnected pavilion forms arranged around a central living hub. This approach allows the home to sit comfortably within the landscape while creating clear separation between family, guest and entertaining zones. Careful consideration was given to the site's level changes and the dramatic vegetated hillside backdrop, ensuring the home engages naturally with its surroundings while maximising views and privacy.
Large openings, expansive terraces and thoughtfully positioned outdoor spaces create strong connections between the interior and the landscape, allowing natural light, breezes and views to become integral elements of the living experience. The architectural composition balances scale with refinement, using a contemporary material palette and carefully articulated forms to create a residence that feels both substantial and welcoming.
The result is a modern rural retreat that successfully combines architectural presence with everyday functionality. Anchored by a generous infinity-edge pool, expansive entertaining terraces and integrated landscaping, the home extends beyond its built form to create a seamless connection with the surrounding environment. The project delivers a timeless family residence that celebrates its setting while providing a highly liveable and enduring home tailored to the clients' lifestyle and long-term vision.
