The Station

The Station was conceived as a landmark hospitality and community destination that would celebrate Yeppoon's railway history while creating a vibrant new gathering place for locals and visitors. The brief centred on the adaptive reuse of the heritage-listed railway station and platform, transforming the site into a multi-purpose precinct incorporating dining, entertainment, event spaces and family-friendly outdoor areas. The client sought a destination that would honour the site's historical significance while establishing a commercially viable and highly activated community hub.

The design carefully balanced heritage conservation with contemporary functionality. Existing station buildings and platform structures were retained and repurposed, with former railway spaces transformed into hospitality venues, commercial kitchens and event areas. A key challenge was achieving modern requirements while preserving the historic fabric of the site. Innovative design solutions allowed new pathways, levels and circulation spaces to be integrated without compromising the character of the original railway infrastructure. The project also embraced the site's history through the adaptive reuse of a genuine train carriage as the Carriage Bar, while new architectural elements were designed to complement and remain subordinate to the existing heritage buildings.

Today, The Station has become one of Yeppoon's most recognisable destinations, bringing together hospitality, entertainment and community activity within a uniquely Queensland setting. The revitalised precinct provides a variety of dining experiences, event opportunities and public gathering spaces that encourage connection and activation throughout the day and evening.

By preserving and celebrating the site's railway heritage while introducing contemporary uses, the project has successfully transformed a deteriorating historic asset into a thriving community landmark that will continue to serve future generations.

Recognition of the project's success has extended beyond the local community, with The Station receiving two Queensland state design awards for its outstanding approach to heritage conservation, adaptive reuse and placemaking.
